Free The Eagle
the eagle of the united states of america has been clipped of its wings,
trapped to the confines of the suburbs and coasts
while the rest of america looks up at the sky,
littered with as many bright stars as institutional injustices.
but some can’t even see the sky:
they are locked up or left to live in areas so polluted the lakes no longer match the sky
or lying in a grave for a crime they didn’t commit.
Together We Stand For Change!
our country, once hoped to be red, white, and blue,
is now red, white, and blue.
our news is not about american triumph but american tragedy:
discrimination, death, division, and desperation
dominate our nation, threatening us like the four horsemen of the apocalypse,
making us all ask ourselves,
are we truly the greatest country on earth?
Together We Stand For Change!
let us not forget we are a place where black americans are killed for living, for running, for sleeping, for
riding bikes, for eating, for breathing.
let us not forget we are a place where asian americans are screamed at, cursed at, punched at, beaten at,
and shot at.
let us not forget we are a place where women are treated as objects, as tools, as inferiors, as idiots, as
worthless.
Together We Stand For Change!
our country is drowning,
both from the rising water from our vile emissions
and from the tears of the marginalized from our vile acts.
this year we faced three pandemics-
covid-19, carelessness, and contempt:
we have a vaccine for one.
Together We Stand For Change!
but we can still dream, hope, desire, and aspire.
we can still look to the stars and know the american dream lives on.
we can stand unequivocally for equity.
we can justify justice.
we can normalize abnormality.
Together We Stand For Change!
everyone, regardless of color, creed, class, or character, rise up,
free the caged eagle of our country
and build the bridge into a better tomorrow.
we are diseased but not dead
and we must heal.
so gather, protest, march, and scream,
“Together We Stand For Change!”
